Recent developments in the Sinai Peninsula have sparked tensions between Egypt and Israel, with Israel's ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, accusing Egypt of violating the peace treaty between the two countries. Leiter highlighted the construction of military bases in Sinai, claiming that these facilities are designed for offensive operations and weaponry, marking a significant shift in Egypt's military posture.

Leiter emphasized that this action represents a clear breach of the 45-year-old peace agreement, which was intended to ensure stability between the two nations. Israel is expected to address Egypt's military buildup in Sinai soon, with Leiter stressing that this issue is no longer something that can be overlooked. The situation has escalated following a video released by Egypt, showcasing its military capabilities, which includes hundreds of tanks, fighter jets, helicopters, and navy vessels.

This growing military presence has caught the attention of Israeli officials, especially after the publication of satellite images that suggest changes in Egypt's military deployments in the region. Security coordinators in Israeli border communities have expressed concern over the potential security implications of these developments.

Retired Lt. Col. Eli Dekel, who has spent decades studying Egypt, noted last year that Egypt had significantly increased its armored forces, adding 700 tanks. This strategic buildup further complicates the security landscape, especially as tensions in the region rise.

Leiter's comments also reflect broader worries about Egypt's evolving stance. In May 2024, Dekel observed that Egypt had made several veiled threats against Israel, including military rhetoric and propaganda films targeting Israel’s military capabilities. Egypt’s military posture in the region, coupled with its threats, has led some to question its intentions and role in regional instability.

Egypt’s military presence in Sinai has long been justified as a measure to combat terrorism spilling over from Gaza and to prevent the spread of extremist groups into Egyptian territory. However, the recent military buildup in the region is being viewed by Israeli officials as a more aggressive maneuver, potentially signaling a shift in Egypt's approach to its security relationship with Israel.

The concerns raised by these developments in Sinai bring into question the durability of the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, which has been a cornerstone of stability in the region since its signing in 1979.
