Egypt has announced that it will soon present a “comprehensive proposal” aimed at rebuilding Gaza, with a focus on ensuring that Palestinians remain on their land, according to a statement from the country’s foreign ministry on Tuesday. The Egyptian government emphasized its willingness to cooperate with U.S. President Donald Trump to achieve a fair and lasting peace in the region, while making it clear that it rejects any plan that would involve relocating Gaza's population.
This statement comes as President Trump continues to press forward with his controversial plan to resettle Gaza's residents in neighboring Egypt and Jordan. Despite growing opposition from Arab states, Trump has proposed the idea of taking over the Gaza Strip and resettling its population elsewhere, including parcels of land in Jordan and Egypt.
In a meeting on Tuesday with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, President Trump reaffirmed his vision, saying, "Palestinians will live safely in another location that is not Gaza." Trump suggested that the U.S. would “run” the Gaza Strip properly, but would not “buy” it. The king, however, responded diplomatically, stating that any future plan should serve the best interests of all parties involved. While Jordan's King Abdullah did not directly reject Trump’s proposal, he did mention that Jordan would accept 2,000 sick children from Gaza for medical treatment as a humanitarian gesture.
In response to Trump's proposal, Hamas strongly condemned the plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza. The militant group issued an official statement calling on Arab countries to unite in opposition to what it called Trump's "displacement project." Hamas compared Trump's statements to a declaration of U.S. intentions to occupy Gaza, stating, "We do not need any country to patrol the Gaza Strip, and we do not accept replacing one occupation with another."
Hamas’s rejection underscores the deeply entrenched resistance to any plan that would involve the forced displacement of Palestinians from their homeland. The group is calling for an emergency summit with Arab countries to confront what they see as an existential threat to Palestinian sovereignty.
Egypt's Position: A Focus on Rebuilding Gaza
While rejecting any proposal that would displace Gaza’s residents, Egypt’s foreign ministry reiterated its commitment to a peaceful resolution. The country is expected to present a plan that focuses on rebuilding Gaza while ensuring that Palestinians remain in their homes. This proposal aligns with Egypt’s longstanding stance on Palestinian rights and its efforts to mediate peace in the region.
The Egyptian government continues to emphasize the importance of preserving Palestinian land and the establishment of a Palestinian state as part of any long-term peace agreement. This vision contrasts sharply with Trump’s push for a different approach to managing the Gaza Strip, highlighting the challenges of reconciling U.S. and Arab perspectives on the future of Gaza and the broader Middle East.
