Israel's Defense Ministry has announced that Maj.-Gen. (res.) Eyal Zamir will replace Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi as the IDF Chief of Staff, following the approval of the government vetting committee, led by former Chief Justice Asher Grunis. The committee’s green light signals the final step before the cabinet’s imminent confirmation of Zamir in the role.

Zamir, who has held several prominent positions in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), including Deputy IDF Chief, Southern Command Chief, and Military Secretary to the Prime Minister, has long been considered one of the top candidates for the position. His extensive experience in Israel’s defense relations and force buildup over the last two years, combined with his leadership in crucial military positions, makes him well-suited for the role.

In fact, Zamir was a close contender to Halevi for the role of IDF Chief in January 2023, though Halevi was chosen by then-Defense Minister Benny Gantz. This time around, Zamir beat out other notable candidates such as Maj.-Gen. Amir Baram and Maj.-Gen. Tamir Yadai.

There have been longstanding calls for Halevi's resignation, particularly following the events of October 7, 2023. The political and defense establishment has pushed for a swift replacement of Halevi, with officials citing the need for a smooth transition and preparation for the challenges of the ongoing war. Senior defense officials have stressed the urgency of bringing in a new IDF chief, particularly to deal with the ongoing security challenges and the broader geopolitical situation.

Zamir’s tenure as Deputy IDF Chief and his experience overseeing the Southern Command have earned him significant support. Despite potential concerns over his previous role in the Southern Command, which was during the 2015-2018 period, Zamir is seen as an experienced and capable leader.
