The IDF was accusing Hamas of using a school as a headquarters and otherwise hiding its military activities among civilians on Monday even as a Hamas official boasted that the group has plenty of fight left in after 11 months of war. Monday saw intense airstrikes on Hamas targets all over the Strip, with Hamas claiming that 18 Palestinians were killed.
However, even though the IDF has made progress in its war aims, there is evidence that Hamas is regrouping in northern Gaza. This included a rocket that was fired at the Israeli city of Ashkelon from Gaza City on Saturday. The IDF is redeploying the 5th Brigade to the Netzarim Corridor of the central Gaza Strip in an effort to keep Hamas fighters from moving north. This move is significant as it marks the Brigade's latest deployment in Gaza several months after it was withdrawn.
“The resistance has a high ability to continue,” Hamas political official Osama Hamdan told AFP recently. “There were martyrs and there were sacrifices… but in return, there was an accumulation of experiences and the recruitment of new generations into the resistance.”
“The American administration does not exert sufficient or appropriate pressure on the Israeli side,” he added. “Rather it is trying to justify the Israeli side’s evasion of any commitment.”
