On Sunday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) fully withdrew from the Netzarim Corridor, completing phase one of the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal, which began on January 19. This withdrawal has already led to significant changes in the region, particularly for Palestinians. After a reduction in IDF presence in the area since January 27, Palestinians have been able to return to northern Gaza for the first time since late 2023.

Despite the completion of the withdrawal, tensions remain high. On the same day as the withdrawal, IDF forces opened fire on Palestinians they claimed had entered their security perimeter in northern Gaza. According to Israeli reports, warning shots were fired to disperse the group, but three Palestinians were reportedly killed in the process. This incident highlights the ongoing volatile situation in Gaza as Palestinians continue to return to areas heavily impacted by Israel’s military actions.

The Netzarim Corridor withdrawal symbolizes Hamas’s increasing influence in Gaza, which some see as a victory for the militant group. However, security concerns persist, with the IDF maintaining strict policies, including a buffer zone to prevent breaches.

The Ceasefire and Hostage Deal: A Work in Progress

The ceasefire agreement, which includes the release of hostages, has already seen 16 hostages freed out of the planned 33 by March 1. As part of this deal, the IDF’s presence in Gaza has been reduced, but they continue to enforce strict measures to maintain security, including firing warning shots at those who approach military positions or security zones.

The situation in Gaza is dire, with many returning Palestinians finding their homes destroyed and entire communities reduced to rubble. Some Gazans, shocked by the scale of the devastation, have turned back south, while others have resorted to setting up tents in the remains of their homes. The IDF continues to monitor maritime activity as well, responding to any suspicious vessels attempting to breach security zones.

The IDF is also engaged in operations in the West Bank and Lebanon, including the elimination of several terrorists in the Nur al-Shams area of the West Bank. Meanwhile, the situation in Lebanon remains tense, with a recent Israeli airstrike killing six in eastern Lebanon.

Defense Minister Israel Katz addressed the security situation, emphasizing that Israel would not tolerate any threats near its borders. He stated, “Anyone who enters the buffer zone does so at their own risk,” reinforcing the military's stance that any threat would be met with force.
