An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier, who survived the deadly Hamas attack on the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, rushed to leave Brazil on Sunday after the country's Federal Court ordered police to open a war crimes investigation against him. The soldier had been vacationing in Brazil when news broke of the investigation, linked to his alleged involvement in the destruction of a residential building in Gaza in November 2023.
The investigation stems from complaints filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation, which claims the soldier was involved in the destruction of a Gaza building used as a shelter by displaced Palestinians. The foundation's accusation, supported by over 500 pages of evidence, led to the court order for the soldier’s arrest. However, the Israeli Embassy and the Foreign Ministry in Brazil have not commented on the ongoing case.
According to reports, the soldier’s family confirmed that he had not been arrested but was actively working with Israeli officials to secure his safe departure. His father, who received messages from the soldier, stated that the soldier and his friend crossed the border and were en route home. "He’s not a suspect; he’s a soldier who’s been through hell," the father remarked.
The situation has sparked political debate in Israel, with opposition leader Yair Lapid criticizing the government for not providing sufficient protection for IDF soldiers abroad. Lapid argued that this situation reflects a broader failure by the Israeli government in handling such international cases, which has created an atmosphere of fear for IDF personnel traveling outside Israel.
The Hind Rajab Foundation, named after a young girl killed in Gaza, has made it its mission to hold Israeli soldiers accountable for alleged war crimes through social media. The group has identified soldiers via online content and alerted local authorities in an attempt to prosecute them for actions taken in Gaza. However, to date, no arrests have been made based on the foundation's efforts.
