Iran Condemns Israeli Airstrikes in Syria and Urges Action from the International Community

Iran's Foreign Ministry has sharply condemned Israel's recent airstrikes on southern Syria, which took place between February 25 and 26. The strikes, targeting areas near Damascus, have drawn widespread criticism from Iran, calling them "a blatant violation of the UN Charter, international law, and Syrian sovereignty."

Iran's spokesperson, Esma’eel Baqayi, labeled these attacks as part of Israel's "expansionist and aggressive actions," urging the international community, particularly Islamic nations, to take swift action against such violations. Tehran has called for strong condemnation of Israel’s actions and emphasized the need for the United Nations to intervene in response to these ongoing violations.

In his remarks, Baqayi further criticized the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for its continued military operations in Syria, which have focused on preventing Iran from bolstering the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Iranian government warned that any future Israeli strikes would amount to an "invasion."

Israel's position on the issue, as articulated by Defense Minister Israel Katz, stresses Israel's commitment to preventing Iranian influence in southern Syria and maintaining control over key strategic areas like Mount Hermon. Katz underscored Israel's long-term objective of keeping the region demilitarized to ensure security from Iranian-backed forces.

This comes amid broader geopolitical shifts in the Middle East, including Iranian discussions with Saudi officials ahead of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting. Tehran’s outreach to Riyadh and other Gulf states reflects its desire to reassert its influence in the region while countering the growing pressure from the United States and its allies.
