As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, Israel's defense establishment is growing increasingly concerned that Iran may seek to act against Israel in the period leading up to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s anticipated return to office in January 2025. With escalating political uncertainty, Israeli intelligence agencies have ramped up efforts to share vital information with U.S. military officials to prevent any surprises during this critical period.

Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions and U.S. Policy Shift

One of the most pressing concerns for Israel is how Iran’s nuclear ambitions will be handled once Trump returns to office. Israel’s defense officials argue that the diplomatic efforts aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program have reached an impasse. According to sources, Israel's leadership must remain aligned with the U.S. and adapt its own military strategy based on Trump’s policy direction regarding Iran.

During his previous term, Trump was adamant that Iran would never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. His administration withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) and imposed a harsh sanctions regime on Tehran. Some sources close to Trump indicate that, had he had a few more months in his first term, he would have intensified sanctions to further destabilize Iran’s economy. The question remains: will Israel's government align with Trump on sanctions, or will they pursue a more aggressive military strategy targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities?

Israeli Airstrikes: A Warning to Iran

Israeli officials are already preparing for potential Iranian retaliation. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) recently carried out a highly strategic airstrike against key Iranian sites in response to growing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence. This strike, which targeted critical Iranian missile defense systems and ballistic missile production facilities, successfully weakened Iran’s defensive capabilities.

According to Israeli intelligence assessments, Iran’s defensive systems, such as radar installations and S-300 missile batteries, were severely damaged. This has left Iran’s strategic military sites vulnerable to further air attacks. In response, there is concern that Iran might seek to strengthen its presence in neighboring regions like Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, potentially moving advanced weaponry into these areas to offset the damage caused by Israel’s airstrike.

A Nuclear Threshold State

Israel's intelligence agencies are closely monitoring Iran’s uranium enrichment levels. Although Iran has not yet reached the 90% enrichment threshold needed for a nuclear weapon, it is now considered a "nuclear threshold state," meaning that it could rapidly increase its uranium enrichment to weapons-grade levels if it chose to do so. This raises the stakes for Israel, which continues to prepare for potential military action to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

The Strategic Shift in the Middle East

Meanwhile, Iran’s growing influence in the region has not gone unnoticed by Israel’s allies. In recent diplomatic moves, Saudi Arabia, which shares Israel’s concerns over Iran, has sought to bolster defense ties with Tehran. Saudi Arabia’s chief of staff, Fayyad al-Ruwaili, visited Tehran in early November 2024 to meet with his Iranian counterpart and discuss defense cooperation, signaling a shift in regional dynamics. This visit follows the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, brokered by China in 2023, after years of hostility.

The potential for a U.S.-Iran confrontation is increasingly real, and Israel’s leadership is bracing for the possibility of significant regional changes. In particular, the renewed tensions between Israel and Iran, combined with the changing political environment in Washington, are forcing Israeli defense officials to stay agile and proactive in their intelligence-sharing efforts and military preparations.
