Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Defense Minister Israel Katz have announced a groundbreaking initiative to enhance the benefits for reservists and their families, marking a significant step in recognizing the contributions of these soldiers. Aimed at improving the financial and social well-being of reservists, this initiative will allocate approximately 3 billion shekels to fund various measures of support.

The initiative was introduced to the Ministerial Committee on the Reserves System, headed by Katz, and will focus on offering financial assistance to reservists’ families, as well as increasing overall recognition for their vital service. As part of the new initiative, a dedicated department will be set up within the Defense Ministry to address the needs of reservists and discharged soldiers. This department will work in collaboration with the IDF, other government offices, and the private sector to improve the rights and benefits of reservists.

One of the key features of the initiative is the introduction of a digital wallet for combat reservists which aims to simplify the process of providing financial assistance and empower reservists with more flexibility. In a historic move, Israel will also offer income tax credits to combat reservists for the first time. Previously, reservists did not receive any tax benefits, but under this new initiative, combat reservists will see an increase in their net salary based on the number of days they serve. This is expected to make a significant difference in the financial well-being of reservists.

Support for Employers and Commanders

The government is also introducing incentives for employers who support reservists by allowing them to take time off for reserve duty without affecting their employment conditions. This move is designed to foster greater cooperation between the private sector and the military and ensure that reservists are not penalized professionally for their service.

Additionally, special grants will be provided to reservists who serve in command positions, further recognizing their leadership and responsibility within the reserve forces.

This comprehensive package of benefits comes at a time when Israel continues to rely heavily on its reserve forces for national defense. With these new measures, the government aims to strengthen the reserve system and ensure that those who serve are properly supported, both during and after their service.
