The Israeli Defense Ministry has announced a multi-billion-shekel deal with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to expand the production of the Arrow 3 interceptor missiles, which have played a crucial role in protecting Israel from ballistic missile threats. The deal follows a significant increase in missile attacks from the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, underscoring the ongoing regional security challenges.
The Arrow 3 system is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside of Earth's atmosphere, and it has been deployed repeatedly in recent months to counter attacks from both the Houthis and Iran. Israel has faced numerous missile barrages, with the Arrow 3 intercepting several attacks, including recent strikes from the Houthis. The missile system achieved a historic milestone in the early stages of the war, successfully intercepting a missile in space for the first time.
Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the Arrow 3, calling it not only a critical defense layer but also a symbol of Israel’s technological prowess. The deal will provide the Israeli military with a significant number of interceptors, further enhancing the country’s defense capabilities.
"The Arrow missile is a critical component of our national defense," said Katz. "It is a symbol of the groundbreaking abilities of Israeli industry and ensures that Israel has the best air defense capabilities in the world."
The Arrow system is part of Israel’s broader multi-tiered defense strategy, which also includes the short-range Iron Dome and medium-range David's Sling systems. These systems work together to provide comprehensive protection against a variety of aerial threats.
As the conflict in the region continues, with Iran-backed groups like the Houthis and Hezbollah intensifying their missile and drone attacks, the expanded production of Arrow 3 interceptors is seen as a vital step in bolstering Israel’s resilience against evolving threats.
IAI CEO Boaz Levy emphasized the importance of strategic cooperation with the United States in developing and financing the Arrow system, saying, “This partnership is a testament to Israel’s technological strength and our commitment to ensuring Israel’s defense superiority."
