Israel Strengthens Security on Syrian Border Amid Assad Regime's Collapse

As the Assad regime in Syria crumbles, Israel is taking decisive steps to safeguard its security, establishing contact with various Syrian rebel groups, including Druze and Kurdish factions. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar emphasized that Israel's primary focus is the protection of its citizens and preventing hostile elements from gaining control in the region.

At a press briefing, Sa'ar explained that Israel's military had taken action to target strategic weapon systems in Syria, such as chemical weapons and long-range missiles, to prevent them from falling into extremist hands. This was in response to recent incursions by armed groups near the Israel-Syria border, which violated the 1974 disengagement agreement. In one instance, militants attacked a UN position, prompting Israel to act swiftly to protect its communities, especially in the Golan Heights.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have rapidly deployed elite units, including paratroopers, armored brigades, and special forces, to secure key positions in Syrian territory. These actions are aimed at reinforcing Israel’s control over vital areas, particularly on Mount Hermon, a strategic site with a clear vantage point over both Syria and Israel. The IDF is also conducting ongoing airstrikes across Syria, including targets in Damascus and military research centers allegedly linked to Iran.

Israel’s military operations, which focus on neutralizing immediate threats, are being carried out with the aim of stabilizing the region in the face of a shifting political landscape. The fall of the Assad regime has weakened Iran’s influence in the area and has led to the rise of Islamist forces in Syria. IDF officials have reiterated that while they are monitoring the evolving situation, their focus remains on ensuring the security of Israel and its citizens.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed optimism about the changes unfolding in Syria, describing the collapse of the Assad regime as a historic development that could have positive implications for Israel’s long-term security. However, Netanyahu also acknowledged the risks and challenges ahead, particularly as rebel groups continue to advance in southern Syria, from Daraa to the Golan Heights.
