The Israeli government has established a new office within the Ministry of Defense dedicated to advancing technology in artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomy. This office, named the AI and Autonomy Administration, is positioned under the Directorate of Defense Research & Development, a pivotal entity in Israel’s military technology sector.

The primary goal of the new office is to enhance the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) capabilities, ensuring the country maintains a technological edge in the volatile Middle East. By uniting experts from the IDF’s technological units, academia, defense industries, and startups, Israel aims to achieve groundbreaking innovations in both AI and autonomous systems.

This new initiative comes in the midst of Israel’s ongoing conflict, the “Iron Swords” war, which has been raging for over a year, involving Hamas and Hezbollah. With the war causing significant casualties—891 soldiers killed and over 5,500 injured by January 2025—the development of AI-driven technologies is seen as vital to reducing manpower requirements while maintaining operational effectiveness.

According to Eyal Zamir, Director General of the Ministry of Defense, the integration of AI and autonomy will enhance operational superiority, decrease casualties, and optimize resource use. This will involve integrated teams of soldiers working alongside autonomous systems across all branches of the military, including ground, air, naval, intelligence, and space.

Israel’s commitment to these cutting-edge technologies underscores its strategy to adapt and overcome the challenges posed by modern warfare, aiming to protect its forces and increase the tempo of operations.
