The Israeli Border Police announced on Sunday that they had conducted sweeps in the past week resulting in the arrest of 495 people who had entered the country illegally, along with 44 Israeli citizens suspected of assisting them. Most of the arrests took place in Jerusalem, and most of the those arrested were seeking to work in Israel's extensive underground economy.
Border Police chief commander Maj.-Gen. Itzhak Brik said, “Last year, on the morning of October 7, on the morning of the Simchat Torah holiday, our fighters acted with determination, professionalism, and supreme bravery, fought Hamas terrorists in face-to-face combat, and halted the terrorist attack.”
“We must continue with the understanding that the security mission never ceases, and we must persist and intensify our activities in order to fulfill our mission of protecting the citizens of the state."
A separate statement by the Border Police added that since the beginning of 2024, over 21,000 people have been arrested while trying to enter or reside in Israel illegally. Another 2,500 suspects have been arrested because they tried to help in these human trafficking schemes.
