A team of Israeli firefighting experts arrived in California on Thursday to assist local authorities in managing the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. The delegation, composed of experts from the Israel Fire Rescue Service, the Foreign Ministry, and the National Security Ministry, aims to share valuable knowledge and experience in preventing fire spread, controlling blazes, and disaster response.

Israel’s Home Front Command will also provide critical expertise in creating situation reports and enhancing disaster response coordination, offering a boost to local efforts to contain one of California’s most severe fires in recent memory.

The Israeli consulate in Los Angeles confirmed that the experts would work alongside local firefighting teams and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. They will utilize advanced Israeli firefighting technology in their efforts to control the flames, providing further evidence of the strong friendship and commitment between the United States and Israel, according to the Israeli ministries.

California Congressman Brad Sherman welcomed the Israeli delegation, acknowledging that Israel is covering the costs of the mission. “The special relationship between America and Israel is on full display,” remarked the House Foreign Affairs Committee Republicans, expressing their gratitude.

Supporting the Local Community

In addition to providing technical assistance, Israeli officials, including Pacific Southwest Israeli Consul General Israel Bachar, visited the affected Jewish communities in Pasadena and Altadena. They saw firsthand the destruction caused by the fires, including the ruin of the 90-year-old Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center. The Israeli consulate has pledged to support these communities during this challenging time.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, alongside the Emergency Volunteers Project (EVP), has also played a vital role in supporting the firefighting efforts. The Jewish Federation of Los Angeles is providing mental health support, shelter, and meals to those displaced by the fires and has set up a Wildfire Crisis Relief Fund to help those affected.

Criticism from Anti-Israel Groups

While many have praised the collaboration, some anti-Israel groups have used the opportunity to criticize Israel. The Adalah Justice Project and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) blamed Israeli actions in Gaza for exacerbating environmental crises, including the wildfires in California. They argued that the carbon emissions resulting from the Israel-Hamas conflict contribute to global climate change, indirectly worsening natural disasters such as wildfires. These claims were further echoed by other activist groups like Code Pink, who linked the war in Gaza to environmental degradation.

Despite the controversy, the Jewish Federation Los Angeles remains focused on resilience, emphasizing the strength of the local community. “In these challenging times, the strength and resilience of our Los Angeles community shines brightest,” they wrote on their website. Together, they aim to support those affected and help rebuild the lost structures and memories.
