In a major development on Monday, the Israeli military confirmed its ongoing campaign against Hezbollah’s weapons smuggling unit operating in Syria. The goal is to prevent Iranian arms from reaching the Shiite terror group in Lebanon, where they can be used to target Israel. This latest series of airstrikes targeted Hezbollah’s Unit 4400, which is responsible for transporting arms from Iran to Lebanon via Syria.
The unit, established in 2000, has reportedly created strategic smuggling routes along the Syria-Lebanon border with Iranian assistance. These routes have facilitated the movement of thousands of trucks and hundreds of planes carrying missiles and weapons components destined for Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel’s military has been striking these routes in a multi-year effort, which has intensified since the onset of the current conflict with Hezbollah.
One of the most significant recent strikes occurred in early October when Israel assassinated the head of Unit 4400, Muhammad Ja’far Qassir, in Beirut. His replacement, Ali Hassan Gharib, was also killed in Damascus, alongside other high-ranking members of Hezbollah's weapons network. The IDF also confirmed the destruction of a major smuggling tunnel that stretched 3.5 kilometers between Lebanon and Syria, which had been under construction since 2009.
In addition to the tunnel, Israel has targeted key Hezbollah command centers and weapons storage sites in the Al-Qusayr region, close to the Syria-Lebanon border. The latest airstrikes, which took place Monday evening, reportedly damaged several bridges in the area, causing injuries to two individuals, according to Syria's state news agency.
Israel’s long-standing campaign to neutralize Hezbollah’s weapon supply lines aims to limit the group's ability to strengthen its arsenal, which could be used against Israeli civilians. In parallel, Israel has carried out extensive aerial operations to prevent Iran from establishing a foothold near Syria's border with Israel. This latest round of airstrikes is part of a broader strategy to degrade Hezbollah's capabilities and prevent the smuggling of arms into Lebanon.
