Over the weekend, Israel continued its military campaign in Gaza, conducting airstrikes against over 100 targets, including Hamas operatives and rocket launch sites. The ongoing conflict has seen significant casualties on both sides, with reports indicating that tens of Palestinians have been killed as the war between Hamas and Israel enters its second year. Israel’s stated goals are to remove Hamas from power in Gaza and secure the release of the hostages held by the terrorist group since October 2023.

The latest military operations come amid intensified fighting and indirect ceasefire talks aimed at reaching an agreement that would see at least some of the 100 Israeli hostages freed. Thousands of Israelis rallied on Saturday to demand that their government secure a deal with Hamas, while the IDF has maintained its presence in Gaza, continuing operations in both northern and central parts of the territory.

Despite the military’s efforts, the conflict has dragged on for over a year, with critics pointing out the limitations of Israel’s strategy of "mowing the grass," which aims to weaken Hamas but stops short of providing a lasting solution. Experts suggest that Hamas’ military infrastructure, including tunnels and weapons depots, will take several years to dismantle fully.

The war has also drawn in regional actors, with Hezbollah and Houthi groups launching attacks on Israel’s northern and southern borders. The fragile ceasefire with Hezbollah, which has been in place for a month, may influence Israeli operations in the coming weeks, particularly as the U.S. approaches a change in administration.

Amidst the conflict, Israel is facing internal calls to alter its policy on humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza, as current efforts are often hampered by Hamas’ control over aid. This, coupled with a growing opposition to Israel’s military strategy, continues to shape the national debate on how to proceed.
