The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently announced the arrival of three additional F-35i fighter jets, which have landed at Nevatim Air Force Base as part of an ongoing deal with US defense contractor Lockheed Martin. These three aircraft bring Israel’s fleet of F-35s to 42, as part of a larger purchase of 50 jets.
Although the jets arrived last week, the announcement was made on Sunday, marking the latest milestone in a long-term agreement between Israel and the US. The deal will gradually increase Israel’s fleet from 25 to 50 F-35s. According to sources, three more aircraft will arrive in about two months, followed by additional deliveries in 2025 and 2026.
This is not the end of F-35 acquisitions for Israel. In 2023, Israel, the US government, and Lockheed Martin signed a deal for an additional 25 F-35s, boosting the fleet to a total of 75 aircraft. This will allow Israel to form a third squadron of F-35s, with deliveries of these additional planes set to begin in 2027.
The F-35 has proven itself crucial in Israel’s military operations, especially during the current ongoing war. With over 15,000 flight hours completed across various fronts, including Iran, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza, the F-35 has become an essential tool for Israel’s defense. Notably, the IDF has modified its F-35s to carry JDAM munitions, enhancing the aircraft’s capability to strike targets with precision.
The F-35’s stealth technology allows it to operate undetected, outsmarting advanced air defense systems such as Iran’s S-300, and possibly even the S-400 system. Its surveillance and intelligence-gathering capabilities far exceed those of Israel’s older F-16 and F-15 aircraft, further solidifying its position as a cornerstone of Israel's air defense.
Lockheed Martin Israel's outgoing CEO, Joshua (Shiki) Shani, emphasized the company’s pride in supporting the Israeli Defense Forces, stating that the new deliveries will strengthen Israel’s military and ensure its continued technological edge in the region.
Alongside the F-35 program, Israel is also advancing its capabilities with additional investments in its air force. This includes the acquisition of 25 F-15 EX Boeing fighters and four Boeing KC-46A midair-refueling aircraft, which will play a significant role in enhancing Israel’s operational reach and preparedness for future missions.
