Despite facing multiple challenges, including ongoing regional conflicts, Israel is unwavering in its commitment to combating climate change. Ambassador Gideon Behar, Israel’s special envoy for climate change and sustainability, is leading the Israeli delegation at the *29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29)* in Baku, Azerbaijan. The conference, running from November 11 to November 22, brings together global leaders to discuss solutions for a rapidly changing climate.
"Climate change continues to happen, and it is important that Israel remains part of the efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change*,” Behar emphasized during the conference. “We have a lot to contribute to the cause. Because of our history, Israel is a global superpower in climate innovation.”
For decades, Israel has faced water scarcity and droughts, yet has pioneered groundbreaking technologies that have allowed it to thrive in arid conditions. Through innovations in water management and agriculture, Israel has become a leader in sustainable technologies. The country’s advanced water technology, which includes *desalination plants* and wastewater treatment (where Israel recycles over 95% of its wastewater), has made it one of the most efficient water users in the world. Behar highlighted how Israel’s ability to deal with droughts and water scarcity can offer solutions to other nations struggling with similar challenges.
Israeli Startups on the Frontlines of Climate Solutions
This year, Israel’s COP29 delegation includes 20 start-ups, all showcasing their cutting-edge solutions in various sectors: energy, water, agriculture, sustainable manufacturing, carbon capture, food tech, and more. These companies are committed to tackling global environmental challenges head-on.
Ambassador Behar also stressed the need for regional cooperation to address climate challenges. "Our whole region needs to become climate resilient because we are all impacted by the phenomena," he said. For example, rising sea levels are a critical issue that affects Mediterranean countries, and Behar advocates for collaboration among these nations to develop preparedness plans.
