Italy's Foreign Ministry confirmed that journalist Cecilia Sala, known for her podcast Stories covering life in various regions of the world, has been detained by Iranian authorities. Sala, who was in Tehran conducting journalistic activities, was arrested on December 19, with no immediate reason provided for her detention.

The Italian Ministry issued a statement on December 27 revealing that the country's embassy in Tehran had conducted a consular visit to assess Sala's condition and state of detention. During this visit, Sala was able to speak with her family, who were informed of her situation.

Sala had been in Tehran working on a podcast episode about patriarchy in the Iranian capital, which she posted just days before her arrest. Her detention comes amid increasing reports of Western and dual-national journalists being targeted in Iran, a country often accused of using such arrests to pressure Western governments.

Earlier in December, Reza Valizadeh, a dual U.S.-Iranian journalist, was sentenced to ten years in prison by Iran's Revolutionary Court on charges of "collaborating with a hostile government." Valizadeh's case highlights the broader trend of Iran’s crackdown on journalists, as the country ranks 176th out of 180 in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index.

The Iranian government has long been accused of stifling press freedom, making it one of the world’s leading jailers of journalists. This incident is likely to add to the growing international scrutiny of Iran's human rights and freedom of expression practices.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian is scheduled to visit Russia on January 17, where the two countries are expected to sign a cooperation agreement. Both Russia and Iran have faced intense sanctions from Western nations, and their bilateral relations have strengthened in recent years, particularly in military and economic sectors.
