Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei escalated tensions on Monday with strong remarks calling for death sentences rather than arrest warrants for Israeli leaders. Khamenei, in a speech quoted by Iranian state media IRNA, specifically targeted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials, stating, "Netanyahu and the criminal leaders of this regime must be sentenced to death."
This statement comes in the wake of an announcement from the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Netanyahu, Israel’s former defense minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military leader Mohammad Deif. The warrants were related to alleged war crimes committed during Israel’s military operations in Gaza. However, Khamenei dismissed the warrants as insufficient.
This rhetoric reflects the broader tensions between Iran and Israel, particularly over Israel's ongoing military actions in Gaza, where Iran has voiced strong support for Palestinian terrorist groups.
In parallel, Iran confirmed on November 24 that it would hold nuclear talks with Britain, France, and Germany on November 30, addressing not only the nuclear impasse but also regional and international issues. These talks are seen as part of Iran’s efforts to find a resolution before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, 2025.
