Kuwaiti writer and media personality Fajer Al-Saeed was detained last week after a video emerged of her speaking with Israelis and referring to them as "our cousins." The video, which was shared across her social media platforms, led to an investigation into her advocacy for establishing ties with Israel and accusations of undermining state interests. As a result, Al-Saeed has been incarcerated for 21 days in Kuwait's central prison, following an order by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The case stems from charges filed by Kuwait's Interior Ministry, accusing Al-Saeed of violating the 1964 Israel Boycott Law. This legislation strictly prohibits any interactions with or promotion of relations with Israel. The video, which depicted Al-Saeed welcoming Israeli individuals into her home in Virginia and calling them "our cousins," sparked a wave of controversy, with many believing it led to her arrest.

Al-Saeed has long been a vocal supporter of peace with Israel, having spoken in favor of normalization since at least 2018. She has also appeared in Israeli media outlets, advocating for diplomatic relations. In June 2023, she was denied entry to Lebanon, a decision some attributed to her stance on normalization with Israel, while others speculated it was linked to her outspoken criticism of Hezbollah.

Over the years, Al-Saeed's social media posts have stirred controversy, with many perceiving her statements as supportive of diplomatic ties with Israel. These posts, which some view as violations of Kuwaiti law, have been met with backlash. A custody renewal judge will soon review her case to determine whether her detention will be extended or if she will be released pending trial proceedings.

Al-Saeed's arrest adds to growing concerns over the state of freedoms in Kuwait.
