Lebanon's Beirut airport authorities intercepted a large sum of money—$2.5 million—in cash concealed in a man’s possession as he arrived from Turkey. The money was reportedly intended for the Hezbollah militant group. This marks the first time such a seizure has been made at the airport. The funds, along with the detainee, will be handed over to the investigation division at Lebanon's General Directorate of General Security, according to a statement from the country's finance ministry. However, Hezbollah was not directly mentioned in the statement.

Iran has long been accused of using civilian flights to smuggle funds to the terrorist group Herzbollah, which has provoked responses from Israel, including threats aimed at curtailing these activities. Hezbollah, which has faced significant challenges following the 2023 war with Israel, has seen a reduction in its power within Lebanon. Despite its diminished standing after the war, the group's activities and smuggling attempts remain a significant point of tension.

Hezbollah's Financial Troubles

Following Israel’s strikes on the group, Hezbollah has experienced a severe financial crunch, impacting its ability to pay its members, some of whom have fled their homes in search of stability. This has added to the ongoing challenges Hezbollah faces, both in terms of its internal operations and its broader political influence in Lebanon.

Lebanon's political environment is also shifting. The new government has distanced itself from previous statements that justified Hezbollah’s role in defending the country, signaling a potential move away from the group's previous dominant influence in national politics. As Lebanon continues to struggle with a severe economic crisis, Hezbollah's financial woes could further undermine its standing in the region.
