The Los Angeles area is grappling with its worst wildfire season in history, with fires leaving widespread devastation across multiple regions, including the Pacific Palisades. Among those affected is Daniel Sher, an associate rabbi at Kehillat Israel, whose own home was reduced to ashes in the blaze. Sher expressed his heartbreak in a video shared with his congregation, highlighting the tremendous loss felt by his community, with many members also losing their homes.

Sher’s emotional message resonated with many, as the tight-knit Jewish community in Los Angeles, the second-largest in the United States, has been coming together to offer support and relief during this challenging time. The Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center, a historic synagogue, was completely destroyed, but its members worked tirelessly to save their Torah scrolls before the fire consumed the building.

In response to the crisis, synagogues and community centers in unaffected areas are opening their doors to those who have lost everything. Local Jewish organizations are providing vital assistance, from distributing food to firefighters to offering no-interest loans for displaced families. Yeastie Boys Bagels, a local food vendor, has been feeding firefighters and evacuees, while the Jewish Free Loan Association is offering emergency funds to those in need.

The fires, driven by high winds, low humidity, and dry conditions, have forced over 100,000 people to evacuate, and tragically, at least five lives have been lost. As the fires continue to spread, many are reflecting on the devastation and the urgency to address the underlying environmental factors contributing to these disasters.

Rabbi Jennie Rosenn of Dayenu called for increased support for affected communities, while encouraging a broader shift toward a sustainable future. For now, the focus remains on providing immediate relief and rebuilding efforts. Despite the heartbreaking losses, the community’s resilience shines through, with Sher reassuring his congregation that, “When a community experiences heartbreak together, it means we can mend our hearts together as community as well.”
