Mark Carney has officially been elected as the new leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, succeeding Justin Trudeau as prime minister. Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has no previous experience in elected office but won the leadership race decisively, securing 85.9% of the vote. Carney’s rise marks a new chapter in Canadian politics, with national elections set to occur by October 2025, where he will face Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party.

However, Carney’s leadership has been met with mixed reactions, especially concerning his stance on Israel and antisemitism. Canada’s Jewish community, while supportive of the departure of Trudeau, remains uncertain about Carney’s commitment to fighting antisemitism and his position on Israel. This comes amid growing concerns over an increase in antisemitic attacks within Canada, including the recent rise in violence targeting synagogues and Jewish institutions.

Carney's relationship with Israel has been one of ambiguity. Though he condemned antisemitism and supported Holocaust remembrance efforts, including participating in Holocaust memorial events, his record on Israel’s right to defend itself is far from clear. In a notable political debate, Carney inadvertently stated that he agreed with Hamas regarding Gaza’s governance, which he later corrected, clarifying that he opposed Hamas’ involvement in a post-war Gaza. This statement, however, has left some critics feeling that Carney's position on Israeli-Palestinian issues remains vague and unconvincing.

Carney has expressed support for a two-state solution and has called for peace between Israel and Palestine. However, his critics argue that his responses are often too ambiguous, lacking the strong stance that the Jewish community in Canada might expect from its political leaders. Conservative mayor Jeremy Levi from Hampstead, Quebec, voiced concerns over Carney’s silence on Israel and antisemitism, arguing that his inaction speaks volumes.

Despite these concerns, Carney has attracted attention for his leadership style and strong political support. His rise to the leadership of the Liberal Party comes during a turbulent period in Canada’s political landscape. Relations with the U.S. have been tense due to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, and the question remains whether Carney will fulfill his vow to protect Canadian interests against such foreign policies.

Carney’s position on Israel and antisemitism will be under close scrutiny as he takes the helm of the country. The Jewish community, though hopeful for positive change, remains cautious, awaiting more concrete assurances about Carney's leadership on these critical issues.
