Beginning January 2025, visitors to Israel will need to apply for an ETA-IL (electronic travel authorization permit) or a visa, according to the Population and Immigration Authority. This requirement will apply to most foreign travelers, except Israeli citizens or individuals who hold an Israeli identity number.
For dual passport holders, a transition period is in place. They will be able to travel to Israel using their foreign passports until December 31, 2025. After this date, an ETA-IL will be required for all visitors.
How to Apply for ETA-IL
The ETA-IL is an online application that must be filled out by each individual traveler. It costs 25 NIS (approximately $7) per person. Once approved, the permit remains valid for up to two years or until the expiration of the traveler’s passport—whichever comes first. The permit allows stays of up to 90 days in Israel. Those wishing to extend their visit will need to apply for a stay extension through the Population and Immigration Authority.
The online application requires travelers to provide personal details such as their full name, date of birth, and nationality. They will also need to provide travel information, including the reason for their visit and the planned dates of stay. Passport details and a clear photo must also be uploaded. Visitors are encouraged to apply for the ETA-IL well in advance of their planned trip, with a valid passport required for at least six months.
It’s important to note that the ETA-IL does not automatically guarantee entry into Israel. It merely allows the traveler to reach the border crossing, where entry will be determined by Israeli border officials.
This new travel policy aims to streamline entry procedures while ensuring that all travelers meet the necessary security and immigration requirements.
