In a violent confrontation on Saturday, Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s (PIJ) Jenin Brigade commander, Yazid Ja'isa, was killed during an exchange of fire between Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces and armed militants in the West Bank city of Jenin. The clash occurred as PA forces attempted to dismantle terrorist networks in the city, which has long been a stronghold for militants.
The incident unfolded when PIJ fighters reportedly attempted to prevent PA security forces from entering the refugee camp area of Jenin, a site that has seen growing tensions between the PA and factions alienated from the Palestinian leadership. The clashes come in the wake of protests in the city following the death of a Hamas operative at the hands of PA security forces earlier this week.
In a statement, the PA security branch confirmed that their forces were conducting an operation aimed at restoring order to Jenin’s historic refugee camp. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly ordered security services to remain in the city until the situation with the local militant groups is resolved.
Israel, however, expressed concern over the pace of the operation, with reports suggesting that Israeli officials criticized the PA for its "defensive" approach, urging a more aggressive stance in dealing with the militant groups.
Earlier this week, tensions also escalated when members of Hamas and PIJ allegedly stole vehicles from the PA’s security services after clashes over arrests of several group members. General Anwar Rajab, spokesperson for the PA security forces, confirmed that the stolen vehicles would be recovered, and those responsible for the theft would be held accountable.
The situation in Jenin has become emblematic of broader unrest in the West Bank, with other cities like Tulkarm and Nablus also witnessing violent exchanges between Palestinian security forces and armed groups.
