Poland's defense industry is gearing up for unprecedented growth, with the country’s defense budget expected to reach an astounding 4.7% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025. This move comes amid escalating security concerns following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has prompted Poland to ramp up its military capabilities. As the U.S. continues to be a crucial ally, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has called on other countries in the region to follow Poland’s lead and increase their defense spending.
Poland has been a steadfast supporter of Ukraine throughout the ongoing conflict, providing significant military aid and pushing for Ukraine's future NATO membership. During Hegseth’s visit to Poland, he praised Poland’s defense efforts, highlighting the country’s dedication to shared European security and mutual defense goals. Poland’s defense spending is set to rise by PLN 27.8 billion ($47.1 billion) in 2025, further solidifying its position as a key player in Europe’s defense landscape.
In a significant move to bolster its military capacity, Poland is also seeking deeper collaboration with U.S. defense industries. Polish officials expressed interest in engaging the U.S. in joint ammunition manufacturing, particularly in light of new funding to support Poland's ammunition production. A fund of PLN 3 billion ($758 million) will be allocated to boost local and international investment in Poland’s defense manufacturing, focusing on the production of 155mm artillery shells. This initiative will ensure Poland is not only self-sufficient in defense production but also capable of expanding its exports.
During his talks with Polish leaders, Hegseth underscored the importance of cooperation with Poland’s defense industry, pointing to previous significant contracts such as F-35s, HIMARS, Patriots, and Apache helicopters. As Poland continues to modernize its military forces, the U.S. is committed to increasing defense collaboration, ensuring interoperability and enhancing the overall security of the region.
Broader Regional Security Focus
Poland’s defense growth is not just about strengthening its own military; it also signals a broader commitment to Europe’s defense posture. Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that Europe must take on a larger role in securing its own territory, with increased defense expenditures being crucial for the continent’s long-term stability. This message aligns with growing calls for European countries to develop a more independent defense capability, especially in light of potential shifts in U.S. involvement in European security.
