In his Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis issued a strong message ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, condemning the "scourge of antisemitism" and emphasizing the importance of remembering the horrors of the Holocaust. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, a pivotal moment in history that Pope Francis reminded the world should never be forgotten or denied.

"The horror of the extermination of millions of Jewish people and others of different faiths during those years must never be forgotten or denied," Pope Francis said. He highlighted the life of Hungarian-born poet Edith Bruck, a Holocaust survivor who now lives in Rome, as an example of resilience and survival.

The pontiff also acknowledged the suffering of many Christians during the Nazi era, noting that numerous Christian martyrs perished in concentration camps. In his prayer, he renewed his call for global unity in eradicating antisemitism and all forms of discrimination and religious persecution. "Together, let us build a more fraternal, just world," he urged, emphasizing the importance of educating young people to embrace values of fraternity, forgiveness, and peace.

While traditionally cautious in taking sides in global conflicts, the Pope has recently been more outspoken on various issues, including his calls for the release of hostages held by Hamas after the October 7, 2023, attacks in southern Israel.
