A high-ranking Russian delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Kremlin envoy Alexander Lavrentiev, has arrived in Damascus for the first time since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad. This visit marks a pivotal moment as Russia seeks to solidify its long-term presence in Syria, securing its strategic military interests following significant political shifts in the region.

Russia, a key ally of Assad during Syria’s protracted civil war, is focusing on safeguarding its military foothold in the country.

Russia’s two primary military assets in Syria—the naval facility in Tartous and the Hmeimim airbase near Latakia—are of immense strategic importance. The Tartous facility, which serves as Russia’s only Mediterranean repair and replenishment hub, plays a crucial role in Moscow's military logistics. Additionally, Syria has served as a transit point for Russia's military contractors, deployed to various regions, including Africa.

According to Syrian sources, the Russian delegation is expected to hold talks with Syria’s new leadership this week, with discussions focusing on the status of these key military bases. This indicates Russia’s clear intention to maintain its presence in the region despite the evolving political and military landscape.

Moscow’s efforts to secure its interests in Syria reflect its broader strategy of asserting influence in the Middle East, particularly in the face of changing alliances and the ongoing threat posed by various factions within Syria.

This visit is also significant in light of recent commentary from Israel regarding its position on regional security, particularly concerning Hezbollah and Lebanon. Maj.-Gen. (res.) Eliezer "Chayni" Marom recently criticized the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire agreement, emphasizing the need for Israel to assert control over certain areas in southern Lebanon. His comments highlight the broader regional tensions that continue to shape the strategies of all involved parties, including Russia.
