On Sunday, the situation in southern Lebanon escalated as hundreds of Lebanese individuals attempted to cross through Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) defense lines, seeking to return to villages in the region. The IDF responded with warning shots to prevent the individuals from advancing, resulting in tragic consequences. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least 22 people were killed, and 120 others were wounded during the altercations.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain complex, with conflicting reports regarding the identities of those attempting to cross the IDF defense lines. While some were suspected of being Hezbollah fighters, others were believed to be civilians. Among the casualties, there were also reports that a Lebanese soldier was killed, though the IDF initially denied this and later indicated that the soldier had been wounded but was not necessarily dead.

The IDF suggested that Hezbollah was encouraging mass groups of Lebanese civilians to approach Israeli positions, possibly to create diplomatic and military pressure for a full Israeli withdrawal from the area. Hezbollah has not launched any rockets into Israel since the ceasefire took effect in November 2023, but the group appears to be playing a key role in shaping the situation in southern Lebanon.

Although the IDF began withdrawing from significant portions of the region in late December, several areas remain under Israeli control, as the Lebanese Army has not fully deployed to the region or neutralized Hezbollah's weapons caches. The IDF has repeatedly stated that Hezbollah has been using southern Lebanon as a staging ground to amass a vast arsenal of rockets, which could be used against Israel in the future.

While the situation in southern Lebanon is tense, the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, brokered by the United States, has been extended until February 18, 2025. The extension allows for continued negotiations, particularly concerning the return of Lebanese prisoners captured during the October 7, 2023, attacks. Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati confirmed that Lebanon would comply with the terms of the ceasefire until the new deadline.

Israel, however, faces significant challenges regarding its security concerns in the region. The IDF's decision to remain in some areas beyond the 60-day deadline has raised concerns, as it risks further inflaming tensions with Hezbollah and the Lebanese government. The U.S. has expressed support for the ceasefire extension but has also emphasized the need for a delicate balance to avoid the collapse of the ceasefire agreement.
