Turkey’s defense industry continues to demonstrate robust growth, with exports reaching a total of $7.1 billion in 2024, a significant increase from $5.5 billion the previous year. Haluk Görgün, president of the Defense Industry Agency, shared these figures during the Global Defense and Aerospace Industry Strategies Conference in Antalya. This increase reflects the sector’s expanding global footprint, with Turkish defense products reaching 180 countries last year.

Turkey’s defense exports have evolved in sophistication, with the country now producing advanced platforms such as drones, warships, and electronic-warfare systems for its armed forces. Notably, companies like Baykar, TUSAŞ Aviation, and Aselsan have taken the lead, with Baykar alone generating $1.8 billion in exports. Other major exporters include ASFAT, MKE, and Roketsan, contributing significantly to the growth.

The growth trend is not just regional but also global, with major defense recipients including NATO members like the U.S., Czechia, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. Analysts highlight that, while Asia-Pacific has traditionally been a target market, Turkish defense exports are now seeing increasing demand in the U.S. and Europe.

Italy’s Defense Investment: €23 Billion Tank and Vehicle Deal

Meanwhile, Italy’s defense sector is also making waves with a massive €23 billion ($24 billion) order for tanks and fighting vehicles. Italian Defense Chief Gen. Luciano Portolano recently challenged the joint venture between Leonardo and Rheinmetall to deliver 1,050 Lynx vehicles and 272 Panther tanks as quickly as possible, stating that national security demands urgent modernization of Italy’s military fleet.

The deal, which follows a joint venture announcement in October 2024, aims to equip the Italian army with state-of-the-art tracked vehicles. Leonardo and Rheinmetall have ambitious plans for mass production, with an expected peak year of 2031, during which 171 vehicles and tanks will be produced.

Gen. Portolano emphasized the urgency of the project, stating, "We cannot protect you if you cannot support us," highlighting the critical need for timely delivery to bolster Italy’s defense capabilities.

As countries like Turkey and Italy ramp up their defense capabilities and export potential, it’s clear that the global arms race is intensifying. With increasing geopolitical tensions, nations are looking to modernize their military forces, making strategic investments in advanced technologies and vehicles to safeguard their interests on the world stage.
