US President-elect Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, has returned to Qatar to continue critical hostage deal negotiations after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Witkoff’s meetings and discussions have reportedly led to progress in securing a deal for hostages held in Gaza. The talks, which also involved a conference call with President Biden's senior adviser, Brett McGurk, are centered on finalizing the terms of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange.
According to sources, Netanyahu’s decision to send high-ranking Israeli officials—including Mossad Chief David Barnea, Shin Bet Chief Maj.-Gen. Nitzan Alon, and Diplomatic Adviser Ophir Falk—to Doha signals significant movement in the talks. This delegation will continue to negotiate and push forward with securing the release of hostages, a priority for both the Israeli government and the Biden administration.
A White House spokesperson confirmed that while progress is being made, Hamas continues to present obstacles in the discussions. Despite these challenges, both the Israeli and US teams remain committed to finding a resolution, with a focus on the safe return of hostages and a reduction in military operations in Gaza.
The hostage deal, if finalized, will be a pivotal moment for both the outgoing and incoming US administrations, showing international cooperation and diplomacy at work amid the ongoing crisis. Families of the hostages have expressed cautious optimism, welcoming the decision to send an elite Israeli team to Doha for further negotiations.
