Senior Russian diplomats announced that Russian and US teams are set to meet this week to discuss improving relations that have deteriorated due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Tensions between the two countries have reached levels unseen since the Cold War, prompting both sides to seek avenues for dialogue.

In a move to bolster international cooperation, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund, as a special envoy for international economic and investment cooperation. Dmitriev, a seasoned investment banker with experience at top US firms like Goldman Sachs and McKinsey, will take on a more formal role in negotiations between Russia and the West.

The upcoming meetings come as US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in delivering a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine, a conflict that has claimed countless lives. Trump has suggested that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky desire a resolution.

In recent conversations, Trump and Putin discussed improving bilateral relations and ending the war. While Moscow has called for a reduction of tensions, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov emphasized the importance of real progress during the scheduled meeting at the end of the week.

On the Ukrainian front, President Zelensky expressed willingness to step down if it would guarantee peace for Ukraine, though he emphasized the importance of securing Ukraine's NATO aspirations in any potential peace agreement. Zelensky also criticized Trump's stance on the Ukrainian leadership, with the US president branding him a "dictator" and pushing for elections amid ongoing conflict.

As the war rages on, Russia controls significant portions of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014, and other regions in the Donbas area. Despite these territorial gains, Russia's actions continue to face widespread condemnation from the international community, which supports Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Simultaneously, Ukraine is pushing for financial reparations from Russia, seeking justice for the immense destruction caused by the war. Ukrainian officials are working to establish a framework for compensation and have launched an International Register of Damage to document claims from victims of the conflict.

In the face of ongoing hostilities, Ukraine's government is also advocating for the use of frozen Russian state assets to fund reconstruction and military efforts. These calls for reparations are part of a broader strategy to hold Russia accountable under international law.
