The US Treasury Department has announced sanctions targeting six senior Hamas officials in an effort to disrupt the terrorist organization’s operations. The sanctions focus on Hamas representatives abroad, a senior member of the group's military wing, and individuals involved in fundraising and weapons smuggling activities into Gaza.
According to the Treasury Department's statement, these individuals facilitate Hamas's terrorist activities by representing the group internationally, securing funding, and coordinating the transfer of goods and money into Gaza. The sanctions also seek to disrupt Hamas's ability to generate additional revenue for its operations.
Among those targeted is Abd al-Rahman Ismail Abd al-Rahman Ghanimat, a long-standing member of Hamas's military wing, based in Turkey, who is linked to several terrorist attacks. The US sanctions also include Hamas officials operating in Turkey and Gaza, some of whom have engaged in diplomatic interactions with Russia and served as spokespeople for the group.
In response, the US has warned Turkey against harboring Hamas leaders, stressing that Washington does not support the comfortable living conditions of individuals tied to terrorist organizations. While reports suggest some Hamas leaders may have moved from Qatar to Turkey, the US has not confirmed the details but made it clear that relations with Hamas are not acceptable.
Meanwhile, tensions continue to rise inside Israeli prisons, where Hamas and Fatah leaders reportedly threaten to incite violence. Israeli Prison Services Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi shared alarming statements from imprisoned Hamas and Fatah officials, warning of escalating unrest within the prisons.
The US sanctions come as part of broader efforts to apply pressure on Hamas, aiming to curb its terrorist activities while the region remains embroiled in conflict.
