In a powerful message aimed at Iran, the United States launched air and naval strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen on Saturday evening, signaling a strong stance on the Houthi threat and their activities in the region. According to US officials, the strikes are expected to continue for "days, possibly weeks." The action comes as the Trump administration is also proposing to open negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program, setting the stage for complex geopolitical interactions in the coming months.

The strikes targeted key Houthi infrastructure, including radar systems, air defenses, missile, and drone systems. Additionally, Houthi-run health ministries reported over 23 casualties and more than 20 wounded. One significant attack targeted an electrical installation in the city of Dahyan in the Saada province, causing a city-wide power outage.

US President Donald Trump condemned the Houthis' violent actions in a post on his Truth Social account, stating that these actions had severely disrupted global commerce by targeting American vessels and attacking international shipping lanes. Trump also called out Iran, accusing it of funding the Houthis and enabling their violent campaign against global shipping routes. He emphasized that the US would not tolerate these attacks and would respond with "overwhelming lethal force" until their objectives were achieved.

Trump’s statement underscored the broader stakes at play, stating that the Houthis had jeopardized the freedom of navigation in critical waterways, threatening international trade. He further warned Iran to immediately cease its support for the Houthis, or risk severe retaliation from the United States.

The Houthis had previously paused their attacks on Israel during the Israel-Hamas ceasefire but have recently announced plans to resume attacks, citing the Israeli blockade on Gaza as a key reason. The current US action aims to restore stability in the Red Sea and reopen international shipping lanes, which have been severely disrupted by Houthi attacks in the region.
