President Joe Biden is committed to ensuring the safety of the remaining 101 hostages in Gaza, refusing to allow them to remain in the dangerous and dire conditions for an additional two months due to the U.S. government’s transition period, Special Envoy Amos Hochstein revealed. Hochstein made this statement in a call with members of the U.S. Jewish community, emphasizing the administration's resolve to act without delay.
Hochstein, who previously led negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, provided details about the ceasefire agreement and the progress made towards securing a broader truce in Gaza. He also clarified that the U.S. government has been in communication with President-elect Trump's team, ensuring continuity in the negotiations despite the upcoming leadership transition.
“We’re not going to wait, and I don’t think it’s right for any of the families to tell them, ‘just tell your relatives in these horrible conditions to risk death every day and torture,’” Hochstein said, reiterating that the Biden administration is committed to leveraging the deal to help secure the hostages’ release as soon as possible.
Regional Developments and Focus on Hamas
In his briefing, Hochstein pointed out the complicated dynamics in Gaza, noting that despite widespread blame directed towards Israel, Hamas has not been negotiating in good faith. However, the situation shifted when Hezbollah, with Iranian support, reached a ceasefire deal in Lebanon, easing tensions on Israel’s northern front. “Israel is now fighting a one-front border,” Hochstein explained, emphasizing that this would enable Israel to focus its efforts on Gaza without additional threats from the north.
In closing, Hochstein praised President Biden’s longstanding commitment to Israel, emphasizing the importance of U.S. leadership in the international arena. “Joe Biden has the credibility to call world leaders and convince them to support Israel and oppose those who seek to isolate it,” Hochstein said. He contrasted Biden’s diplomatic influence with that of the previous administration, highlighting the necessity of a U.S. president who can rally global support for Israel.
