French Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets have proven their capabilities in countering Houthi-operated Shahed-type drones during operations in Yemen, showcasing their potential as a powerful tool in the defense against aerial threats. According to reports from the Militarnyi news agency, the French Air and Space Force's Chief of Staff, General Jérôme Bellanger, confirmed that these jets successfully intercepted and destroyed approximately ten drones in recent missions.
The Mirage 2000-5F’s performance against the Shahed drones comes at a critical time, with these drones increasingly being used in conflicts around the world. General Bellanger emphasized the importance of the aircraft’s role, noting, "The Ukrainian Armed Forces have received the first Mirage 2000-5 fighters transferred by France. These jets will play a direct role in Ukraine’s defense." The French fighter jets' success in Yemen is seen as a precursor to their deployment in Ukraine, where they will face similar threats from Russian and Iranian-made drones.
A video recently released by the French military highlights a Mirage 2000-5F pilot’s perspective as they shoot down a Shahed drone using an MICA air-to-air missile. The footage highlights the aircraft's precision, rapid response, and ability to neutralize aerial threats with accuracy, making it an invaluable asset in combat scenarios involving drones.
The French military’s involvement in Yemen, as part of Operation ASPIDES, has included intercepting Houthi-launched kamikaze drones targeting a French frigate, the Alsace. On March 9, 2024, French fighter jets successfully intercepted four drones, demonstrating the operational effectiveness of the Mirage 2000-5F in active combat zones.
As Ukraine faces increasing drone threats, particularly from Russian forces, the arrival of these fighter jets will provide a critical boost to its air defense capabilities. The Mirage 2000-5F’s proven success against Shahed drones suggests it will be a highly effective asset for Ukrainian pilots working to counter drone warfare in their skies.
