In a recent interview on the podcast "Jung & Naiv," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz firmly rejected the accusations that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Scholz, speaking with journalist Tilo Jung, described such claims as "absurd," reinforcing his stance in the midst of ongoing international debates and investigations.
The two-hour interview touched on various topics, including the situation in Gaza and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) investigations into Israel's actions during its war with Hamas. Scholz emphasized that while there is room for legitimate criticism of Israel's military actions, the charge of genocide is unfounded and wrong. As a lawyer, Scholz expressed his belief that any potential ICJ ruling of genocide would be a misjudgment.
Scholz has consistently supported Israel’s right to defend itself. He stated that Germany’s support, which includes military aid to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), is crucial, especially given the ongoing threat posed by Hamas. He further affirmed, "It is completely right that we support Israel, including equipping the IDF."
This stance aligns with Scholz's past pro-Israel statements. During his visit to Israel in October 2023, Scholz strongly condemned the Hamas-led October 7 massacre and warned Iran and Hezbollah against intervening in the conflict. Scholz’s visit underscored Germany's commitment to supporting Israel and the importance of upholding democratic values, especially in times of extreme crisis.
Scholz’s comments come as Germany prepares for snap elections following a no-confidence vote in December 2024. Despite the political climate, his party, the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), remains vocal in its backing of Israel and its defense policies.
The Chancellor's remarks contribute to the broader global discourse on Israel’s actions in Gaza and the ongoing ICJ investigations. While the war with Hamas continues, Scholz’s firm position highlights Germany's steadfast support for Israel’s right to self-defense.
