In a major development, Arbel Yehoud, Gadi Moses, and five Thai civilians were freed from captivity in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, as Israeli security forces successfully brought them to Israeli territory. The release took place amidst tense circumstances, with Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militants, as well as large groups of Gazan civilians, surrounding the location in Khan Yunis, Southern Gaza.
Both Yehoud and Moses were abducted when Hamas militants invaded their homes during the initial attacks. Moses, now 80 years old, marked his birthday in captivity, while Yehoud, a German-Israeli citizen, was also taken from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz. The two hostages were seen in a video shared by PIJ prior to their release, which reportedly shows them reuniting in Gaza. According to an Al Jazeera report, this was the first time Yehoud had encountered an Israeli since his abduction.
The release of these hostages coincided with that of Agam Berger, an IDF observer who had been taken captive by Hamas. Berger was freed from the northern Gaza Strip and transferred to the Red Cross before being brought to Israeli security forces.
In a related development, the Israeli government delayed the release of Palestinian prisoners, which had been planned for Thursday. The Israeli political echelon, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, decided to halt the prisoner release until the safety of Israeli hostages is fully ensured.
The prisoners had already boarded buses, but an order from the Israeli government postponed their release at the last minute. The decision is part of Israel’s broader negotiations to secure the safe return of its citizens held in Gaza.
As these hostages are safely returned, Israel continues to engage in intensive efforts to recover more individuals still in captivity. The release of hostages such as Yehoud, Moses, and Berger underscores the ongoing and complex dynamics of negotiations in the region.
