The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a series of airstrikes late Thursday night in southern Lebanon, targeting key facilities used by the Hezbollah terror group. The IDF stated that these sites, backed by Iran, were storing weapons and launchers that posed a direct threat to the Israeli home front.
The strikes hit locations near the towns of Yohmor, Deir Siryan, Yater, and Zibqin in southern Lebanon. According to local reports, the operation came amid growing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with both sides maintaining a volatile presence along the border.
The IDF labeled Hezbollah's activity at these sites as a blatant violation of existing understandings between Israel and Lebanon. The airstrikes coincided with pro-Hezbollah protests in Beirut, where demonstrators clashed with the Lebanese army. The protests followed reports that Lebanon's aviation authorities had blocked an Iranian passenger flight from landing, following accusations that Iran was using such flights to smuggle cash to Hezbollah.
At the same time, statements about Israel's presence in southern Lebanon continue to be contested. Israel had agreed to a ceasefire in November, under which it was meant to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon by February 18. However, Israel has asked for an extension, with reports indicating the US has allowed Israeli forces to remain in five key positions beyond the deadline.
The conflict with Hezbollah has been ongoing since October 8, 2023, when the group launched attacks on Israel in solidarity with Hamas, which had earlier invaded Israel. The resulting war led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people from northern Israel and extensive casualties on both sides. Hezbollah's involvement in the conflict, alongside Iran's backing, has made it a central figure in the broader regional instability.
Israel’s continued presence in Lebanon, despite the ceasefire agreement, raises questions about the effectiveness of the Lebanese military in securing its southern region. The Israeli military has reported discovering Hezbollah weapons caches in areas where the Lebanese army is supposed to be deployed, arguing that the ceasefire agreement has not been fully enforced.
