Investigators are delving into allegations that hundreds of thousands of dollars were funneled from Qatar to aides of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in recent months. This new development comes as part of an ongoing investigation into the relationships between figures in Netanyahu's circle and Qatar, with suspicions that money may have been used to improve the Gulf state's image.

The investigation, ordered by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and led by the Shin Bet and police, follows reports from Channel 13 on Friday. The probe suggests that six-figure sums were transferred to Netanyahu’s aides indirectly through intermediaries, including one tied to Jonatan Urich, a senior adviser to Netanyahu. Urich, who has previously served as a spokesman for Israel's Likud party, has denied any connection to Qatar.

While Israel has no formal diplomatic relations with Qatar, trade relations between the two nations existed from 1996 until they were severed in 2009 amid previous conflicts. Recently, however, scrutiny over Qatar's alleged influence on Israeli politics has intensified.

The investigation has drawn more attention in light of accusations against Netanyahu's former spokesman, Eli Feldstein, who is believed to have worked for Qatar via a firm contracted by the country. According to reports, this firm was tasked with influencing Israeli journalists to promote pro-Qatar narratives, particularly related to Qatar’s role in negotiations between Israel and Hamas for the release of hostages.

The case has sparked public outrage, especially among protesters who gathered in Tel Aviv, where they decried the alleged ties between Netanyahu's office and Qatari interests. Protesters fear that such influence may have even affected the negotiations for freeing hostages held by Hamas, who have been in captivity since the deadly October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

In addition to these allegations, Feldstein is under investigation for his involvement in leaking classified military documents to the press, which may have been intended to sway public opinion against a ceasefire and hostage release deal at the time.

As the investigation continues, public scrutiny over the relationship between Netanyahu’s aides and Qatar has only intensified, with "Qatargate" becoming a rallying cry for critics of the prime minister.
