Iranian forces are reportedly positioned to strike Israel in response to last month's retaliatory actions by the Israeli military, according to sources cited by Al Arabiya on Sunday. This news comes on the heels of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issuing a new wave of threats against both Israel and the United States, promising a "crushing response" to Israel's recent operations.
It remains unclear whether Tehran plans to launch the attack from Iranian soil or via other means. Intelligence reports suggest that Iran may initiate the strike from Iraq, potentially involving its proxy groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, or various militia groups operating in Iraq. Haidar al-Lami, a member of the political bureau of Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba—an Iraqi militia group—recently stated in an interview with Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar that his organization is coordinating with Iran to strike Israel.
In preparation for potential escalations, the United States has deployed B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers to the region. The Biden administration has cautioned Iran against initiating another attack on Israel, emphasizing that it may not be able to restrain Israel's response if provoked further. According to reports, Washington communicated directly with Tehran, conveying that it might not prevent Israel from reacting robustly, nor ensure that any response would remain limited and precise.
Israel's recent retaliatory strikes targeted Iranian military sites, significantly impacting Iran's ballistic missile production capabilities. This action was in response to Iran's attack at the beginning of October, which struck several military sites and resulted in the death of one individual in the West Bank.
The situation remains fluid, and the international community watches closely as tensions simmer. The potential for further escalation underscores the fragile balance in the region and the critical importance of diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider conflict.
