Organizers of the World Indoor Bowls Championships have renewed their invitation to Israeli players, allowing them to participate in the prestigious event in England next month. This decision follows a series of discussions and the implementation of enhanced security measures, which aim to address concerns raised by pro-Palestinian groups earlier in the day.
Initially, Israeli players were set to be barred from the competition due to security concerns amid political tensions. However, after evaluating the situation and securing additional safety protocols, the organizers have expressed their commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all participants. The revised statement clarified that the safety of the competitors, staff, and spectators was the sole reason for the initial decision.
"We are pleased to announce that after various discussions, we managed to approve enhanced security measures for the event," the organizers stated. "We are therefore happy to say that the level of security will allow us to welcome the Israeli team to the event."
The World Bowls Tour (WBT) had previously canceled Israel’s participation in the World Indoor Championships after the involvement of Israeli bowlers in the Scottish International Open in August led to a “significant escalation in related political concerns.” This decision had been met with criticism from local parliamentarians and Jewish organizations.
The re-invitation of the Israeli team has been widely welcomed, especially after the organizers acknowledged the disappointment caused by their earlier decision. They emphasized that the renewed invitation was made after working to find a viable solution that balances safety and inclusion.
The World Indoor Bowls Championships will take place in January in England, with Israeli players now confirmed to join the tournament.
