In a landmark decision last week, Judge Miriam Ilani of the Jerusalem District Court ruled in favor of five plaintiffs who had cooperated with Israel and were subsequently imprisoned and tortured by the Palestinian Authority (PA). The court awarded the plaintiffs a total of NIS 8 million in compensation for the severe physical and psychological abuse they endured.
The rulings describe horrific cases of torture, including severe physical injuries, sleep deprivation, and emotional trauma that left lifelong scars. Judge Ilani criticized the Palestinian Authority, stating that its actions constituted a "blatant violation of basic human rights" and noting the profound impact on the plaintiffs' lives.
The plaintiffs, who had worked with Israel in its efforts to combat terrorism, have faced prolonged suffering due to their cooperation. These rulings are seen as a significant victory, not only for the individuals involved but also in sending a strong message of justice for those who assist Israel in the fight against terrorism.
Lawyers Barak Kedem and Aryeh Arbus, representing the plaintiffs, hailed the court's decision as a step toward true justice. They emphasized that the legal struggle would continue with the aim of expanding compensation laws to ensure that those who cooperate with Israel are properly compensated for the torture they endured.
The legal team is also awaiting a decision from Israel's Supreme Court on key issues related to punitive damages, which could lead to additional compensation for those affected by the PA's actions. This ongoing legal battle aims to hold the Palestinian Authority accountable for its actions while offering financial and psychological support to the victims.
These rulings are seen not just as a financial settlement but as a step toward ensuring justice for those who risked their lives in support of Israel. The message is clear: the State of Israel will protect and support those who stand with it in the fight against terrorism.
