A recent report by Israel's State Comptroller, Matanyahu Englman, has revealed a concerning mental health crisis in the wake of the October 7 attack, estimating that approximately three million Israelis may suffer from PTSD, anxiety, or depression as a result of the traumatic events. With a staggering 38% of the population reporting symptoms of PTSD and 32% experiencing depression, the need for mental health services is urgent.

However, many are unable to access the necessary care due to long wait times, with individuals waiting up to six months to see a psychiatrist through the health funds. The report emphasizes the detrimental impact of delayed treatment, noting that prolonged distress could lead to permanent mental health issues and disrupt social and family relationships. It is alarming that 90% of those experiencing symptoms have not sought treatment, primarily due to the long waiting times, lack of awareness, or a lack of trust in healthcare providers.

The report also highlights the Health Ministry's failure to prepare adequately for mass evacuations and the subsequent mental health needs of evacuees, with only 11% of evacuees receiving necessary mental health care in the six months following the attack. The report further addresses the mental health of first responders, such as ZAKA volunteers, who were exposed to extreme trauma but received minimal support.

The comptroller has urged the government to develop a comprehensive, long-term plan to address the mental health needs of those affected by the war. Mental health professionals and organizations are calling for immediate intervention to ensure that those harmed by the events of October 7 and the Israel-Hamas War receive the care they desperately need.

In response to the report, the Health Ministry acknowledged that the mental health system was already struggling prior to the war, and while improvements are being made, it is clear that more action is required to meet the overwhelming demand for care.
