The Palestine Liberation Organization, led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and considered to be the legitimate leadership of the Palestinian people by the international community, declared on Friday that it mourned the death of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar. In an official statement, the PLO expressed its sadness at the "martyrdom" of Sinwar, declaring him to be a "great national leader" of the Palestinian people and cause.
The Fatah party, which Abbas also leads and which is the largest faction within the PLO, added a statement that Israel’s “killing and terrorism will not succeed in breaking the will of our people.”
Similar statements were also issued by other factions within the PLO, including the left-wing Palestinian National Initiative and Palestinian Democratic Union.
Expressions of sorrow at Sinwar's death were also heard from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who held talks with representatives of Hamas on Friday. Fidan also promised his guests that Turkey will “use all diplomatic means to mobilize the international community against the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.”
