Authorities in Sweden are accusing Iran's intelligence services of sending thousands of SMS messages in 2023 calling on people to attack protesters who burned copies of the Quran. Sweden’s Prosecution Authority said the messages, which were sent in the summer of 2023, were the result of a hacking attack on a cellular provider and “The aim was to create division in Swedish society.”
Separately, Sweden's intelligence service Sapo issued a statement saying that a hacker group had acted “on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to carry out an influence campaign." The statement continued that “The aim was, among other things, to paint the picture of Sweden as an Islamophobic country.”
