Türkiye has achieved a significant milestone in its defense capabilities with the successful third test-firing of the indigenous short-range ballistic missile system, Tayfun. The test, carried out by the Turkish defense firm Roketsan, took place on Monday at 12:37 p.m. local time (0937 GMT) from Rize-Artvin Airport in northeastern Türkiye.

This successful launch marks a continued progression in Türkiye's defense technology. The Tayfun missile, which entered mass production in May 2023 following its second test, now holds the title of the longest-range missile in Türkiye's missile arsenal. Prior test launches occurred in October 2022 and May 2023, all from the same launch location.

The Tayfun missile is designed to engage deep targets with a remarkable range of up to 800 kilometers (500 miles) when equipped with a preformed fragmented warhead. In its standard configuration, the missile can strike targets at a distance of 280 kilometers (170 miles). However, the exact tactical and technical characteristics of the missile remain classified, with Roketsan not disclosing detailed specifications on the missile's real operational capabilities.

As the longest-range missile in Türkiye’s arsenal, Tayfun is poised to enhance Türkiye’s strike capabilities and act as a powerful deterrent in the region's security dynamics.

In an era of heightened global security challenges, Türkiye's ability to independently develop and deploy advanced missile systems like Tayfun strengthens its strategic position and regional influence.
