In the face of rising global wildfire risks, Israeli startup FireDome has introduced a groundbreaking defense system designed to combat wildfires in a way similar to Israel’s renowned Iron Dome missile defense system. Founded in 2024 by Gadi Benjamini and Dr. Adi Naor Pomerantz, FireDome's innovative technology uses artificial intelligence and defense tactics to provide two layers of protection against wildfires.

FireDome's approach was inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, which tracks and intercepts incoming missiles during times of conflict. Benjamini, who served 14 years in the Israeli military, saw an opportunity to adapt these defense mechanisms to protect properties from wildfires. "The biggest challenge in the climate tech area are wildfires... and more specifically, the reaction to wildfires," said Benjamini.

FireDome's system consists of two primary layers of defense. First, a stationary mechanical launcher releases eco-friendly fire-retardant capsules that create a protective barrier when a wildfire approaches. The second layer utilizes AI-powered technology, including computer vision and sensors, to detect and extinguish spot fires caused by embers.

The capsules are equipped with sensors that allow them to release fire-retardant material in precise locations, creating an effective protective shield. This innovation ensures that wildfires are blocked before reaching property or infrastructure. "Eventually, the property remains intact, similar to how the Iron Dome protects a city by intercepting missiles before they arrive," explained Benjamini.

The system is currently in development to protect smaller areas such as neighborhoods, vineyards, and resorts, with a future goal of covering larger areas up to one mile in diameter.

FireDome plans to test the system in Israel by May 2025, specifically in wildfire-prone regions like Jerusalem and the Carmel forest. Looking to the future, the startup aims to expand its operations in the United States by 2026, targeting high-risk areas such as Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Benjamini also shared his thoughts on the recent wildfires in Southern California, noting the advantages of FireDome’s solution: "We can handle strong winds and spot fires, which are the main advantages of our solution." He hopes the system can help mitigate damage by protecting neighborhoods from encroaching wildfires and extinguishing spot fires in real time.

With the backing of some of the top names in the defense industry, including Pinchas (Pini) Yungman, one of the founding fathers of the Iron Dome and David's Sling systems, FireDome is poised to revolutionize the way wildfires are fought.
